Gender Eligibility Policy

This policy describes how Bike Monkey approaches transgender athlete participation in the gender categories at our events. It applies to all events Bike Monkey produces, across road, gravel, and mountain bike disciplines.

Our Approach

Bike Monkey is committed to maintaining a welcoming space for every athlete at our events, regardless of gender identity. We are equally committed to protecting fair competition for cisgender women in events where prize money, professional opportunities, and livelihoods are at stake. Both commitments are real to us, and holding them together requires compromise.

For Bike Monkey, the conflict between inclusion and fair competition truly begins at the elite/professional level — where cisgender women are competing for income and career advancement. At every other level of our events, that conflict largely falls away.

Gender Policy

Transgender women are welcome to compete in the women's category consistent with their gender identity at every Bike Monkey event, with the single exception of designated elite/pro women's fields where prize money is at stake.

Basis for the Tiered Approach

This policy distinguishes between elite/professional women's fields with payouts and all other women's categories because the competitive context is materially different. Where prize money, contingency, professional opportunities, or series-points payouts are at stake, athletes are competing for income, livelihoods, and career advancement, and the integrity of those outcomes depends on a fair field of play.

The eligibility criteria for elite/pro women's fields are not authored by Bike Monkey. They are drawn from the current UCI Eligibility Regulations for Transgender Athletes. The UCI — cycling's international governing body — established these regulations through its own sport-specific evidence review, following the procedural framework set by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which calls for eligibility criteria to be evidence-based, sport-specific, and respectful of athlete rights. By aligning the elite tier of our events with the cycling-specific governing body's criteria — rather than authoring our own medical or performance standard — we apply restrictions only where the sport's governing body has determined they are warranted.
