A few weeks ago, an email landed on my desk promoting a previously unheard-of cycling-related event. We get a lot of emails like that here at Bike Monkey, and my hand hovered over the delete button–but then I saw that this particular guy was partnering with our friends over at the Sonoma County Bicycle Coalition for the show. I read a bit more and thought to myself, “That sounds cool. He sounds nice. I should follow up on that.” (more…)
In 1771 the Portola Expedition, a Spanish mission to explore the upper regions of California, stood on the very same spot that we did at the conclusion of our Bay Area Ridge Trail adventure. Similar to our bike journey, which was the first time that a majority of the Bay Area Ridge Trail system had been ridden by bike, the Portola Expedition was the first recorded land entry and exploration of the greater Bay Area. On our quest we covered 214 miles of Bay Area Ridge Trail, climbed 30, 876 ft of vertical, spent 48 hours on the bike, burned around 17,000 calories and visited 25 different Bay Area parks. (more…)

Dear friends,
Many of you are aware of the quickly approaching event “Annadel 2010″ organized by Bike Monkey this Saturday, September 11th and 12th.
This two-day festival is in collaboration with State Parks, Regional Parks and the Agriculture and Open Space District. It is being kicked off Saturday by the first organized mountain bike race in Annadel in over 20 years at 9:00am. The day also includes an organized 12 mile run that starts Saturday at 9:30am and an outdoor gear festival on Sunday that is open to the public and sponsored by REI of Santa Rosa.
Bike Monkey needs some help from the general cycling populace of Sonoma County with this event, particularly on Saturday. There are currently over 30 marshal and volunteer medical assistant spots to fill. As you are probably aware, organizing a mountain bike and running event on the same day in our beloved State Park is quite an undertaking, and we are asking for some assistance in making sure that the day unfolds flawlessly.
If you can volunteer a couple hours of your day this coming Saturday September 11th please fill out the volunteer form at http://bit.ly/brP4VU
Your support and participation is always appreciated and we’ll make it worth your while with an event T-Shirt, a meal ticket, and a cold Lagunitas draft beer if you’re of drinking age (or a non-alcoholic beverage of choice).

In all the madness of the world, a beam of clarity has shone down upon us all. Let Bike Monkey Issue #10 drape you in its cleansing light, whether you read it in bucolic surroundings or in the deep recesses of your bathroom. Peace is where you find it my friends; Bike Monkey magazine will lead you there. Be they scathing exposes of the bike polo’s gritty underworld, paradigm-crashing deconstructions of the male-dominant culture of bike mechanic-ing, or visionary experiences along Saigon’s bike-choked back alleys, we never fail to deliver when you need us the most.
For those of you who subscribed, it’s on its way to your mailbox. For those of you who signed up for the GranFondo, we’re sending you a couple of issues on the house. For those of you who like us, but can’t understand why the magazine won’t come to you, you’ll probably need to subscribe. It’s in bike shops and bookstores too, because we know that paying retail cost for the mag is important to some folks. If you don’t see it in your favorite shop, tell them so, then tell us. We’ll bring the rain like they never done seen.

Combining local knowledge, years of professional cycling experience, and the scientific expertise of the sport’s most celebrated training physician, the “Massimo Fondo” training camp will coach twelve riders on Sonoma County’s most famous routes as a benefit for Levi’s GranFondo charities.
